People today are like beasts, eating each other, just to reach a goal, and in the end they see that they are left alone, says director Nela Vitošević before the premiere of her new play "Firma" by Roland Schimmelfenning at the Drama Theater in Skopje.
Vitošević is working on a play for the third time at Drama, after "Strangers" and "My Husband." For her, Schimmelfinig is an author she has worked with many times, and she understands his language.
"The idea was to show a harsh corporate world, which is a mirror of capitalist society, through the conflicting relationships of 6 characters, who are racing to reach the top of the hierarchical pyramid. And in that race against time, in that race to the finish line, they somehow lose themselves, they lose their social life. And when they turn around somewhere there, they see that their lives are completely empty, that apart from work, they have left everything else in the background and they feel extremely lonely. That is in a way what I think capitalism brings, and that is the complete alienation of people. With the intensification of social networks, I think that human relationships have been lost, people are turning into much more machines. That natural touch has been lost and I think that in a way we are trying to convey that in the play" - Vitošević.
The director conceptualizes the play as a ring arena, in which the characters have a specific opponent, but very often they are their own opponents. In that arena, apart from the specific partner with whom they are in conjunction and in conflict, they show their internal conflicts, internal struggles and problems through internal introspection.
"Through that ring arena, we are in a way mirroring capitalist society. In that ring arena, everyone is like beasts, eating each other, just to reach a goal. But we also see that the goal is not that important, because they have forgotten the more important things in their lives and are left alone at the end of the day," she said.
